Alghero is an ideal family vacation destination. Kids of all ages will appreciate its many beautiful beaches which make for all-day relaxation or exciting water sports activities, whatever suits you and your family. Each beach has its own characteristics and attracts specific crowds. Alghero is also a very safe place for children and Italians are extremely welcoming and accommodating to families with kids. In the summer time you will find youngsters dashing through the crowded alleys of the old town, and little kids dining with their families late at night.
It is my idea that a vacation becomes memorable when you come to understand another culture, when diversities create new points of growth. For your kids there are a variety of possiblities which will allow them to interact with children from Alghero in stimulating and creative activities.
The Lido di Alghero and Maria Pia are the closest beaches to town and consequentually the most crowded. However, they are ideal for families with little kids. The water is shallow as you go in (no surprises!) and almost always calm. Beach umbrellas and chairs are for rent and there are chiosques where you can purchase refreshments and lunch. Sailing, swimming, acquagym, windsurfing courses arer offered for all ages.
Should you want your children immersed in morning activities with local kids, there are a number of summer day camps on the beach. For example the Cavaluccio Marino organizes creative activities in the shade or beach games by the sea for kids between 3 and 14. They're based near Rafel on the Lido beach. Fun is insured while parents peacefully read a book or take a dip.
Your kids could also sign up for a windsurfing course with Ocean Tribe who are based within the Mariposa camping grounds. Ocean Tribe also rent out kayaks, Stand-Up paddle boards, as well as windsurf gear for the more experienced.
If your kids are motivated and independent between 8 and 17, there are sailing courses on dinghies (Optimist, Laser, 420, 555) organized every morning between 9 and 13:00. The courses are recognized by the Italian National Sailing Authority (FIV) and end of course certificates are awarded. Contact me for details.
